Universal Basic Income for All in Bangladesh: An Approach towards ensuring a Welfare State.

Ms. Tasneem Jahan Tumpa, Lecturer of Economics at United International University (UIU), participated in the dialogue on "Assessing the Viability of Universal Basic Income (UBI) in Bangladesh" organized by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) with support from the European Union (EU). She represented UIU's Department of Economics in the program held at Lakeshore Hotel, Gulshan, Dhaka, on 24 November, 2024.
To promote the concept of a welfare state by reducing the poverty gap and income inequality, CPD has proposed implementing a social safety net called “Universal Basic Income,” through which all citizens of a country may regularly receive a minimum income in cash transfers.
Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, a renowned macroeconomist, public policy analyst and distinguished fellow at CPD, chaired the session. Professor Rehman Sobhan, a prominent economist and founder chairman of CPD, attended as a chief guest. Other distinguished panelists and stakeholders also participated in the discussion and contributed to evaluating the successful management of the UBI proposal.
At the end of the session, Ms. Tasneem Jahan Tumpa exchanged views with Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, Professor Mustafizur Rahman, Mr. Towfiqul Islam Khan and other dignitaries who joined the session.
